Student Learning
A group of Grade 5 students was studying the immigration process for their Social Studies: Canada and World Connections strand. The class read together the graphic novel The Arrival, by Shaun Tan. This visual storytelling of a family's immigration story began their own journey of memoir writing. The students went on to learn about the comics medium, the conventions and 'language' of graphic storytelling. This knowledge would help them to create a graphic story of their own.
The students interviewed a family member and used graphic organizers to develop the 'seed' of the story's mood, which they were to summarize in one paragraph. They developed visuals for the story using a story board, drawings and digital images. The students were to create drawings using design elements of perspective, in order to develop a variety of images, using close-ups, midshots and long shots. The digital images found online, from Creative Commons sites, were to be cited using the online bibliography research tool EasyBib. Some students scanned images brought from home. All images were uploaded to Comic Life, the software with which they created their graphic memoirs. The final products have been printed as graphic novels and saved as digital comics.
